Govt proposes an alpha-numeric hash method to track WhatsApp chat

IT Ministry Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced the New Intermediate Guidelines for Social Media and OTT platforms on 25 Feburary in India.

The government wants to know about the originator details who shared the unlawful and disrespectful content on various social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Koo, WhatsApp messaging services.

The Center government notified the information Technology Guidelines for (Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 that mandates traceability of the first originator of a message flagged by either a court of law or an authorized government agency.

The government told the Facebook-owned WhatsApp which counts India as the largest market with over 400 million daily active users using its services for communicating its inability to provide traceability due to lack of appropriate technology.

The government of India has proposed that WhatsApp assign an alpha-numeric hash to every message sent through its platform as a solution to break the deadlock over traceability on the messaging app, senior government officials told ET.
